PM Skills Development Program Pilot Overview

The PM Skills Development Program is a pilot that comes under the umbrella of the PMI CWCC Mentorship Program. The purpose of the pilot is to connect experienced project managers with less seasoned project managers in a series of monthly workshops.

During each workshop, one team member will facilitate the discussion on a specific project management topic or area of interest to enable experience and learnings to be shared. The result should be a deeper, collective understanding of the subject matter being discussed and the identification of tools and techniques that can be employed within each participant’s project management endeavours.

The focus is intended to be on practical rather than theoretical experiences. The pilot is a six month trial. If successful, this will formalize as an additional program within the overall Mentorship Program.

Application and Acceptance.  Promotion of the pilot intake will be announced in the chapter newsletter for December in preparation for the mandatory kick-off workshop.  Interested participants should apply for the program through the Mentorship team by detailing their relevant project management experience.  You will receive email confirmation from the Mentorship team if you have been accepted for the pilot - creating an even blend of experienced and less experienced project managers is what the Mentorship team will be aiming for.

Pre-work. Program participants are required to complete an online worksheet prior to the kick-off workshop (30 minutes).  This worksheet allows participants to reflect on their experience and expectations and to vote on relevant subjects for the subsequent workshops. The information submitted will be used to direct discussion during the kick-off workshop.

Workshop schedule creation process. Participants gather for 2 hours to discuss the workshop processes and to agree which subjects will form the ‘areas of interest’ to be investigated during the subsequent workshops.  Pre-work information will be made available in the form of participant experiences, suggested ‘areas of interest’ and expectations.  It is envisaged that we are able to develop a list of volunteer participants who will lead each ‘area of interest’ discussion at a subsequent workshop.  Date and location of the workshops will be agreed at this kick-off session.

Skills Development meetings.  The intention is to have one skills development workshop per month reviewing the agreed ‘area of interest’ for that month.  The subject will be led by the volunteer assigned to the workshop and facilitated by the PM Skills Development Program lead.  It is expected that the volunteer will undertake preparatory work of up to 1 hour to create a framework for the discussion at the workshop.

PDU structure. PMPs are awarded PDUs for active participation in the PM Skills Development Program.
