| A Message from the Vice-President of Volunteers, Gino Morena, PMP |
|
Building on the theme introduced in January by Vijay, our newly elected President - and on the message that Alex, our Vice-President of Membership delivered last month - I will further elaborate the focus for the Board of Directors of your Chapter in 2010.
For the past 15 years, I have worked in the high-tech sector, based out of Vancouver, earning my PMP designation in 2004. In my career, I've had the great pleasure of traveling to Europe, India, Australia, and within North America, implementing offshore call centres, and managing technologies for large organizations involved in commercial software. As well, I have helped to grow and lead multi-discipline teams on three continents. Today, I earn my livelihood working for the largest, independent, Japanese-owned software company, where I hold the responsibility of developing and managing our strategic and channel partnerships at the Director level.
The third pillar, or what I like to refer to as the third leg of the tripod, is focused on our Volunteers. If any one of the three pillars (legs) is not stable the tripod cannot, and will not stand. It will tumble on itself. I, along with my direct team, and my indirect team - the other VP's and their team members in their Portfolios - have been charged with the mandate:
To more effectively engage and utilize the volunteer team members, tap into their talent, and increase their satisfaction experience
We will continue to recognize our volunteers, who are the lifeblood of the chapter, and we will foster an environment where the volunteer feels valued and empowered. It's a simple statement; however, it will not be easy. I can assure you that I will do everything in my power, using all the resources available to me, to recruit the best people in order to accomplish our common goals; and I will work with my peers to ensure that each volunteer is utilized to their full potential, while helping to foster a fun and productive environment for each of us to work in.
New initiatives will be rolled out during the year to support this pillar. If you have a desire to get involved, and to commit some of your precious time to help build an even greater chapter, please visit Volunteer Opportunities or contact me directly at volunteers@pmi.bc.ca.
Sincerely,
Gino Morena, PMP

Is it possible to build a real project team in a virtual world?
Here is an intriguing opportunity for PMPs: earn 25 PDUs for participation in a Virtual Project Team.
Ralf Friedrich, project management trainer and coach in Germany, has created a virtual working environment called Second Life to support a research project on virtual teams. You will work with people you have never met in reality to build a homepage. You'll be supported through the whole process as you plan the project in a special virtual environment.
The project starts in early March and runs for 12 weeks. Volunteers will be given tasks to complete and the expected time commitment is 5 hours per week.
You can join the project by visiting http://www.gepros.com/vtr/ and clicking on the Project SL button.
